Sustainability in the Market

2023 marks our second year of transition into a more sustainable farmers’ market. Our goal is to be a "Zero Waste" market by the 2024 season.  We look forward to our community and vendor family joining us on this journey by showing their support as we work together in becoming a leader in sustainability within the farmers market community and an educational hub for all our fellow citizens of Colorado Springs.

To further our Zero Waste Transition, we will not be using or selling these items in the Backyard Markets this year:

  • Plastic Sample Cups (2023)

  • Plastic Packaging/Wrap (2023)

  • Styrofoam (2023)

  • Plastic grocery bags (2022) - We encourage all our patrons to bring their reusable bags when they shop with us!

  • Plastic straws(2022)- We have partnered with PractEco Solutions to provide 100% home compostable straws in our markets.

  • Plastic water bottles (2022) - We have set up a water refill station at the Manager Booth -- bring your reusable water bottles/tumblers and refill for free!

Look for this Sign at both of our Markets!

 Compost & Recycling

This year, we are starting a compost program at the Backyard Markets. This will allow us to divert most of the food waste produced at the market from the landfill and turn it into compost for the community! We have a Compost & Recycling station set up in the market next to the Manager Booth. Stop by and have a chat with us to learn more ways you can help the market be more sustainable!
